Privacy Policy

Kindling is built on a simple principle: your writing belongs to you. This policy reflects that, and we think you'll find it refreshingly short.

Kindling Desktop Application

The Kindling desktop application:

Your project files, writing, and personal data never leave your computer. Kindling operates entirely offline and has no capability to access, read, or transmit your data. There is no cloud sync, no server-side storage, and no remote database. The app makes zero network requests during normal use. Kindling does not use AI to analyze or interact with your writing in any way.

The Website (kindlingwriter.com)

The website is a static site. Here's what we collect:

Email newsletter. If you voluntarily subscribe to our mailing list, we store your email address through our newsletter provider for the sole purpose of sending you updates about Kindling. You can unsubscribe at any time from any email.

Basic hosting analytics. Our hosting provider may collect standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages visited). We don't use these for tracking or profiling. We don't run Google Analytics or any third-party tracking scripts.

No cookies for tracking. The website does not use advertising cookies, tracking pixels, or fingerprinting.

Third-Party Services

Kindling the desktop app does not integrate with any third-party services. It does not send data to analytics platforms, crash reporting services, or advertising networks.

The files you import (from Plottr, yWriter, Obsidian Longform, or Markdown) and the files you export (DOCX, Markdown) are processed entirely on your local machine.

Open Source

Kindling is open source under the MIT license. The source code is available on GitHub, so you can verify every claim on this page yourself. There is nothing hidden.

Data You Control

Since all your data lives on your computer, you have complete control:

Children's Privacy

Kindling does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. Since no account or personal data is required to use the app, there is nothing to collect.

Feedback Collection

When you submit feedback through our website or desktop application, we collect:

We do not collect:

Feedback data is stored for 12 months and then automatically deleted. All feedback is anonymous unless you choose to provide your email address.

Future Changes

If Kindling ever introduces features that involve network connectivity (such as optional cloud sync), this policy will be updated before those features ship, and any such features will be strictly opt-in. The core principle won't change: your writing stays yours.
